FAQs

Brazilian web development questions

What is LGPD and how does it affect Brazilian websites?

LGPD (Lei Geral de Protecão de Dados) is Brazil's national data protection law, modelled on GDPR and in force since 2021. It requires: legal basis for all data processing; privacy notice with purpose specification; consent for sensitive data; right of access, correction, deletion, and portability; DPA agreements with processors; and breach notification to ANPD within 72 hours. ANPD enforcement began in 2023 with fines up to 2% of Brazilian revenue, capped at BRL 50 million per violation.

Do Brazilian websites need to support PIX?

PIX is now the dominant payment method in Brazil - ” 150 million registered users and 42 billion transactions in 2023. Any Brazilian e-commerce, service booking, or subscription website that does not offer PIX loses a significant majority of potential conversions. PIX integration requires the Banco Central do Brasil (BCB) Open Finance API, a participating financial institution partnership, and QR code generation in the checkout flow.
